Why won't my 4-month old baby poop?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema Tips

My 4-month old baby won't poop. I have taken her into the ped several times for this. She is breastfed only right now. Her stools are soft. The ped said her anatomy is perfect, there is nothing wrong. Her muscles are a little tight down there, and the only way I can get her to poo is to use a q-tip every 3 days. The juice and caro syrup do nothing. The enema only gets a little bit out. She is happy and eating well. Am I just worrying about nothing here? I get nervous when she doesn't go every 3 days because I don't want her to be miserable. But I hate doing the q-tip thing and it's the only way she goes! Has anybody ever had this happen?

my daughter is 3- months old. at first i thought she was not eating enough, but the ped told me that breast feed babies may not go but once a week. she eats well, is happy and healthy. and she still does not go but maybe twice a week. and sometimes it is not impressive. do not worry.have you tried baby massage? just massage the belly area.or lay her over your left arm, head near the crook of your elbow, on her stomach, stomach in your hand and rub the stomach, the baby will fart dead in your face, but if anything is in there it is comming OUT. the q-tip thing would get me too. i hope that helps.

My 4 month old daughter is also exclusively breastfed. Our pediatrician told us that it is totally normal for a breastfed baby to poop 7 times in 1 day OR 1 time in 7 days. If your baby is comfortable then I would say leave her alone. You may damage her sensitive parts if you are putting a q-tip up there! Now if your baby seems constipated or uncomfortable then I would try the juice, enemas, etc., but otherwise let her be, when she needs to poop she'll poop. Good Luck :)

Since her stools are soft you probably don't need to use the q-tip and just let nature run it's course. Breastmilk is almost completely absorbed by babies so there is very little left to poop out and most breastfed babies won't go to the bathroom but once every few days or so. If her poop was hard and dry, then there might be a problem, but since it isn't my opinion is that she just doesn't need to poop very often. Try and see how long it takes her to go naturally, without the qtip, and if it is still soft then just thank your lucky stars that you only have to change poopy diapers so infrequently. If it's hard, go back to your ped.

I would not worry…dont mess with her bowel by putting stuff up there…if she hasnt gone in a week then perhaps get alittle concerned. but if she is happy and eating good and her bowels are soft when she goes..then she is good. My twins dont poop everyday the longest they wait to go is four days. as she gets older and starts eating baby food your going to be changing those stinkies all the time!! Dont worry honey!!
