How Can I perform an enema with my bare hands?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

Will it hurt? I'm just trying to be cost-efficient here and dont want to spend the money buying one at the store

Well, you can't give yourself an enema with just your hands, you need something to use as a syringe.

If you have a hot water bottle/syringe combo around the house you can use it.

Fill it with warm water and a teaspoon of table salt for each quart (they typically hold close to two quarts) and put the stopper in with the hose attached. Make sure you have the smaller (enema) nozzle on the hose and not the larger (douche) nozzle, unless you really want the larger one.

Hang the bag on the towel rod, put a towel on the floor to lay on, release the clamp long enough to get the air out of the hose (the air causes cramps).

Use some K-Y or Vaseline on the nozzle, lay on the towel on your left side with your left leg straight and your right leg drawn up toward your chest (Sims position) and carefully insert the nozzle in your anus.

You can control how fast the water flows with the clamp, just open it a little bit to have the water flow slowly or open it all the way to have it flow faster.

When you can't take any more, then stop the flow and take out the nozzle, hold the water as long as you can, then get on the toilet and let it all out.

Repeat as necessary.

If you don't have the hot water bottle/syringe, then the turkey baster really is a good option, just be careful with it and don't hurt yourself.

Good luck.

How come the enema didnt work?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

Doc said to take it. Said it would work. Did i do it wrong? is there even a wrong way? probably not. sorry for asking disturbing questions.

You might have to do it again. Also, you really should have something internal to help things along. I use Senna when I'm not regular. It's not crampy like so other harsh stuff and it's an all natural laxative. After you get a movement, try to keep things moving. Fiber One has a very high fiber-actually good tasting cereals. You get 35-47% of your daily intake just from a small bowl! You have to drink your water too! I'll pray for you.

Can I buy an apparatus to administer an enema more effective than what is generally available in U.S?

As an R.N. I find the hot water bottle with short tip inadequate and the plastic bucket used years ago in the hospital expensive and difficult to find. Can I order something from the UK?

Get a colonic board. It is like an advanced enema used by professionals who give colonics.

What should I expect from a Barium Enema?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

It is on Thursday and I can't eat any food starting tomorrow. Has anyone had one and how bad is it really? Will I feel normal right after it's over? Does it hurt?

Yes, I have had one before, and no, they don't stick a very long tube up your backside.

They insert an nozzle that has an inflatable tip on it. Once inside you, they inflate the tip to keep the nozzle from slipping out because you will be asked to change positions during the procedure.

Barium will be injected to coat the inside of your intestines so that they will show up well on the xrays.

Once your procedure is over, you will be taken to a bathroom in order to expel the barium.

There is no discomfort other than maybe some embarrassment.

After it is all over, worse case, you will be very hungry.

Good luck and I hope nothing serious is discovered.

How does enema cleansing help you lose weight?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

I just heard about it on the radio. In fact, it shocked me so I thought I misunderstood. Anyone out there enlighten me?

If there is one thing that Yahoo Answers is never short of .. it's misinformation.

Enemas and high colonics are two different things. Enemas are administered to clean out your rectum prior to an exam or procedure or if you have blockage. A colonic is more of a colon cleansing that people swear does wonders for them. The danger here is that you knock the system out of balance and the flora and fauna become uneven. Colon hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation were, at one point recommended for those that suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome but most doctors caution against it.

There are some that say that you can lose weight from it but the claims that you are carrying around pounds of waste in your system is a bunch of hoo hoo. If your system was that backed up you wouldn't be able to have a successful bowel movement nor would you be able to function without extreme gastro intestinal pain.

what are some ways to clean my body out without taking a enema?

I want to clean my insides but do not want anything to go up the back door if you catch what I am saying.

LOTS OF WATER!….or cranberry juice.

I am breastfeeding and wanted to check if I can take Fleet Enema?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

Fleet Enema contains sodium phospate but the pharmacist said is should get absorbed in the blood but asked me to double check with my infants ped. I have left a VM for the doc but wanted to see if anyone else had any information on this medication and if its safe during nursing.
I have tried all natural stuff and have tried fiber for a week like metamucil.

According to: Hale, T (1998). Medications and mothers' milk (7th ed.). Amarillo, TX Pharmasoft Medical Publishing:

"Osmotic or saline laxatives (Milk of magnesia, Fleet Phosph-soda, Citrate of Magnesia, Mylanta, Gastrobrom, Epsom Salt)…are poorly absorbed, they stay largely in the GI tract and are eliminated without systemic absorption…the secretion of higher than normal levels into milk is rare and unlikely…Pediatric concerns: None reported via milk."

"Bisacodyl (Dacodyl, Dulcolax) is a stimulant laxative…has only limited secretion into breast milk due to poor gastric absorption and subsequently minimal systemic levels. Little or no known harmful effects on infants…Pediatric concerns: None reported via milk."

I was unable to find any reference to the use of fleets enema and its transference to breast milk. A better alternative for you might be to increase your dietary fiber (fresh fruits, whole-wheat products), increasing fluids, and increasing activity. The prolonged use and reliance on either a laxative or enema can result in difficulty in establishing a return to normal bowel habits for your following your daughter's birth. If constipation continues to be a problem for you, you should discuss this with your health care provider, and remind them that you are breastfeeding your daughter.

Is it okay to use an enema once a week?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

So I usually go for #2 three times a week, and one of those times I use a laxative (an enema). Would that be harmful or is it okay to use an enema once a week? I know it's definitely not a good thing, but my question is whether it's a bad thing?

Seems like that would be a bit harsh on your insides.

Gotta vote for bad thing.

And why in the heck do you need a laxative or an enema in the first place? Are you a scat freak? Or are you constipated? Eat more fiber and skip the chemicals(laxatives) and enemas. Salads, whole grains, fresh veggie. Maybe a glass of Metamucil once a week. Or house about prune juice…

Skip the enemas unless you are "into" that sort of thing…

Why does the pulse decrease when a person is being given an enema? What exactly happens?

Posted by: Peg  :  Category: Enema

I know it has something to do with the vagus nerve, I think. Is this right?

Yes , it is a vago-vagal reaction. Just like when people faint at the sight of blood. the vagus nerve provides parasympathetic input to the heart. Parasympathetic stimulation decreases heart rate, decreases force of contraction and these effects can lower blood pressure too. This happens becaue during the enema, you are stimulating the digestive tract which has alot of parasympathetic input from the Vagus and other nerves.
